In December 2016, to coincide with Smofcon in Chicago, we held the first ever Smofcon South. We had people from all round New Zealand and from Australia, come and participate in a terrific weekend of explanation and discovery. From that weekend we have started to set up our Board, including our Health & Safety Councillor, (thanks to new Health and Safety regulations in New Zealand this position is very necessary). This was a very worthwhile event.
“The Kiwi’s Beak” opens at MidAmericon 2
The “pub” “The Kiwi’s Beak” with it’s signature mocktail, proved a huge hit, as did the magnetic darts game, where you had to hit a NZ icon and then identify it (Note: there were LOTS of clues given). The pavlovas disappeared rapidly, as did the chocolates. The bid table was constantly busy all the time and we have picked up on some good ideas for the next outing, in Helsinki!
Sasquan was SMOKIN’!!!!

Bag End Party at Convergence 2015
We sponsored this party because, well, “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” is right in our wheelhouse. Convergence took place July 2-5, 2015 in Bloomington, Minesota.
Thanks for all your help at LonCon 3
Thanks to everyone who helped run the New Zealand in 2020 table at LonCon 3, and to everyone who stopped by. Thanks to Maree Pavletich who set up and ran the table, Matthew Pavletich, David Thorne, Kelly Beuhler, Daniel Spektor, Alan Parker, Ian and Alison Jack and anyone else who did time… 🙂
Pre-support online!
We have updated the website with more information on facilities, AND you can now pre-support online! We will have a bid table AND we will be holding our first big party at Loncon 3. Probably Friday night, but that has to be confirmed. Sign up on the bottom right for our newsletter, or Like us on Facebook, or Follow us on Twitter…
Facilities and logistics…
Investigation continues apace into facilities and logistics for holding a WorldCon. At this point we are sure that Wellington and Auckland can hold a WorldCon of over 2000 people, and can accomodate those people. Because of the size of the convention, some facilities and accomodation may be a little spread out, but no more than we’ve seen at other WorldCons. It’s all a juggling act. It’s really bodies on the ground who we need to make sure we have. Keep an eye out. We’ll be asking for volunteers soon, just to get an idea of the level of commitment we will have.
Donations for helping victims of Christchurch earthquake
The Red Cross donation website is having problems. Probably from everyone wanting to donate to relief for the Christchurch earthquake. So they suggest using this one in the meantime… http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/
Earthquake in Canterbury
As many of you will already be aware, there was a large earthquake in Canterbury, New Zealand, at 12:57, Tuesday, 22nd Feb, local time. It has caused much more damage than the earthquake that occurred during AussieCon 4 in September last year. The city of Christchurch and surrounding areas are suffering. If you wish, donations for help are being received via the Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org.nz/.
We were greatly moved by the expressions of support from the science fiction community at AussieCon 4 when the earthquake happened last September. It’s memories like that, that help at times like this. Thank you.
And so it begins…
Thank you to everyone who came and found us at AussieCon 4. There is a lot of enthusiasm for the idea of holding a WorldCon in New Zealand. We wanted to especially thank the Texas in 2013 and London in 2014 bids who made us feel so welcome, and invited us to join in their parties on Friday night.
We currently have over 250 pre-supporting registrations…
We also wanted to thank everyone who stopped by to offer their sympathies and support after the Canterbury earthquake. It was much appreciated.
